Homebuyer Education
Home buyer education is the first step towards buying a home. If you want to save money and become a successful home owner, now is the time to get home buyer education and obtain the knowledge to make smart choices when it comes to your mortgage financing. Check with your neighborhood lender or local home counseling agency for classes they have to offer or you may choose one of the options below:
- 1. Gateway to Home Ownership. Gateway to Home Ownership provides first-time home buyers with a network of resources to access credit repair assistance and home buyer education. Gateway to Home Ownership will give you the resources you need to save money, purchase a home you can afford, increase your personal wealth and become a successful home owner.
- Home counseling agencies in the Gateway to Home Ownership network can provide the home buyer education required for WHEDA®'s Rural Initiative Down Payment Assistance program and Partnership Neighborhood Initiative Down Payment Assistance program.
- 2. Home Buyer Club Workshops. You must attend two (2) workshops which cover Preparing Yourself for Home Ownership: Financial Issues and Process and Responsibilities of Buying and Owning. Each workshop is 2.5 to 3 hours. Upon successful completion of both workshops, you will receive a Completion Certificate.
- The Home Buyer Club Workshops can be used to fulfill the Home Buyer education requirement for WHEDA's Rural Initiative Down Payment Assistance program and Partnership Neighborhood Initiative Down Payment Assistance Program.

- Home buyer classes offered through the above WHEDA partners can be used to fulfill the Home Buyer education requirement for WHEDA's Rural Initiative Down Payment Assistance program and Partnership Neighborhood Initiative Down Payment Assistance Program.
- 4. Online Home Buyer Education. Brought to you by MGIC, this online course will provide you with a comprehensive look at the home buying process. The course does not have to be completed in one sitting. You may start and stop at any point when you need to take a break or wish to continue at a later time. Once you've studied each section of the site, you'll be ready to take a test to obtain a Homebuyer education certificate. Please note that when you click on the link above, you will leave the WHEDA web site for the MGIC web site where the online education resides.
- Online education cannot be used to fulfill the Home Buyer education requirement for WHEDA's Rural Initiative Down Payment Assistance program and Partnership Neighborhood Initiative Down Payment Assistance Program.
- 5. Distance Learning Home Buyer Education. WHEDA, and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce have partnered to create a distance learning program for home buyer education in Wisconsin.
- Learn everything you need to know about purchasing a home during a live interactive broadcast presented by several housing counseling agencies in Wisconsin and televised at various community sites around the state. Check out the community listings to find out when and where the classes are being presented. Students and instructors participating in the home buyer education broadcasts will see and communicate with each other in real time.
- Home Buyer classes offered through the distance learning program can be used to fulfill the Home Buyer education requirement for WHEDA's Rural Initiative Down Payment Assistance program.
